VCEG Video Coding Expert Group


The Video Coding Expert Group (VCEG) is a collaborative and international organization responsible for the development and standardization of video coding technologies. VCEG operates under the Joint Video Experts Team (JVET), along with the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG), and is one of the two groups responsible for the development of video coding standards within the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

Background:

VCEG was established in the late 1980s and is composed of experts from various industries, academia, and research institutions. The group's primary goal is to develop and maintain video coding standards that offer efficient compression and decompression algorithms while maintaining high video quality. VCEG's work has been critical in advancing video coding technology and enabling the efficient transmission and storage of multimedia content.

Achievements:

VCEG has been involved in the development of several important video coding standards that have significantly impacted the digital video industry. Some of their notable achievements include:

  1. H.261 (1988): H.261 was one of the earliest video coding standards developed by VCEG. It provided a baseline for video conferencing and video telephony applications. H.261 employed hybrid block-based coding techniques, including motion compensation and discrete cosine transform (DCT) compression.
  2. H.263 (1996): H.263 improved upon H.261, offering better video compression performance and more efficient bitstream syntax. It played a crucial role in enabling video streaming over the internet and was widely used in early web-based video applications.
  3. H.264/MPEG-4 AVC (2003): Also known simply as H.264 or AVC, this standard is one of the most widely used video coding standards in the world. H.264 significantly improved video compression efficiency compared to its predecessors, making it suitable for a wide range of applications, including high-definition video, video conferencing, broadcasting, and video streaming platforms.
  4. H.265/MPEG-H Part 2 (2013): Also known as High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), H.265 is the successor to H.264 and provides even better video compression efficiency. HEVC enables higher video quality at lower bit rates, making it essential for applications that require high-quality video delivery, such as 4K and 8K streaming and video-on-demand services.

Current Work:

As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, VCEG's most recent and significant ongoing work is the development of the next-generation video coding standard known as Versatile Video Coding (VVC) or H.266/MPEG-I Part 3. VVC aims to provide further improvements in video compression efficiency over HEVC, enabling even higher video quality at lower bit rates.

Additionally, VCEG collaborates with MPEG in the development of other video-related standards, including 3D video coding, scalable video coding, and immersive video technologies.

Collaboration with MPEG:

VCEG and MPEG are the two main entities responsible for video coding standardization under the Joint Video Experts Team (JVET). While VCEG focuses on video coding technology, MPEG is responsible for other aspects of multimedia coding, such as audio coding and multimedia synchronization. The collaboration between VCEG and MPEG ensures that video and audio technologies work together seamlessly in multimedia applications.
