A Residential Gateway (RG) refers to a device that serves as the primary interface between a home or small office network and an external network, typically the internet. The RG acts as a central point of control and connectivity, allowing multiple devices within the local network to connect to the internet and communicate with each other.

The term RG is commonly used in the context of internet service providers (ISPs) and telecommunications companies. When a customer subscribes to an internet service, the ISP typically provides a residential gateway device as part of the installation package. This device may also be referred to as a modem-router combo, gateway router, or simply a router.
