NFV Management and Orchestration [MANO] Key Performance Indicators [KPIs]

Network Function Virtualization (NFV) Management and Orchestration (MANO) is a framework for the management and orchestration of virtualized network functions (VNFs) and services. MANO consists of three primary components: NFV Orchestrator (NFVO), Virtualized Infrastructure Manager (VIM), and Virtual Network Function Manager (VNFM).

1. Service Deployment Time

  • Definition: Time taken to deploy a new service or instantiate a VNF.
  • Measurement: Measured from the initiation request to the successful deployment of the service.

2. Service Scaling Time

  • Definition: Time taken to scale a VNF or service up or down based on demand.
  • Measurement: From the point when the scaling request is initiated to when the scaled VNF/service is operational.

3. Resource Utilization

  • Definition: Percentage of resources (CPU, memory, storage, bandwidth) used by VNFs and services.
  • Measurement: Monitor and track resource usage continuously, aiming for optimized utilization without resource contention.

4. Availability and Reliability

  • Definition: Measure of uptime and reliability of VNFs and services orchestrated by MANO.
  • Measurement: Calculate the uptime percentage and monitor the number of service disruptions or failures.

5. Orchestration Efficiency

  • Definition: Measure of how efficiently the NFVO and VNFM components can manage and orchestrate VNFs across the infrastructure.
  • Measurement: Evaluate the time taken to orchestrate complex services, manage faults, and optimize resource allocation.

6. Fault Management

  • Definition: Effectiveness in detecting, isolating, and recovering from faults or failures within the NFV environment.
  • Measurement: Monitor the time taken to detect faults, isolate affected components, and restore services.

7. Cost Efficiency

  • Definition: Measure of cost-effectiveness in terms of infrastructure utilization, licensing costs, operational expenses, etc.
  • Measurement: Analyze the total cost of ownership (TCO) for managing and orchestrating VNFs against the benefits derived.

8. Scalability and Elasticity

  • Definition: Capability to scale resources up or down based on demand and workload requirements.
  • Measurement: Assess the time taken and efficiency in scaling resources to meet varying demand patterns.

9. Interoperability

  • Definition: Ability of the MANO framework to integrate and interoperate seamlessly with various VNFs, VIMs, and external systems.
  • Measurement: Evaluate compatibility, API integration, and smooth operation across heterogeneous environments.

10. Security and Compliance

  • Definition: Ensure that the NFV MANO framework adheres to security best practices, regulatory requirements, and compliance standards.
  • Measurement: Monitor security incidents, vulnerabilities, compliance violations, and ensure timely remediation.
