5g suci

The 5G (Fifth Generation) architecture introduces several new concepts and functionalities compared to its predecessors, one of which is the concept of a SUPI (Subscription Permanent Identifier) and its temporary counterpart, SUPI.

5G SUCI: Structure and Purpose

  1. Definition:
    • SUCI stands for 5G Subscription Concealed Identifier. It is a temporary identifier that is used to protect the permanent identity of the subscriber when transmitting messages over the radio interface.
  2. Purpose:
    • The primary purpose of using SUCI is to enhance the privacy and security of the subscriber. By concealing the permanent identity, it ensures that malicious entities cannot easily track or identify users based on their long-term subscription identifiers.

SUCI Composition:

A SUCI consists of the following components:

  1. Home Network Public Identity (HN-Public Identity):
    • This is typically an International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) or a Public Land Mobile Network (PLMN) Identity. It uniquely identifies the subscriber in the home network.
  2. 5G Globally Unique Temporary Identifier (5G-GUTI):
    • The 5G-GUTI is derived from the SUCI. It's a temporary identity assigned by the serving network to track the subscriber within its coverage area. The 5G-GUTI is used for paging, session management, and mobility procedures.
  3. Protection:
    • The SUCI is encrypted when it's transmitted over the air to ensure that the temporary identifier remains concealed from malicious entities. The encryption ensures that the actual identity remains protected from eavesdropping or any potential attacks.

Generation of SUCI:

  1. Assignment:
    • The SUCI is assigned by the home network during the initial registration of a subscriber in a serving network.
  2. Encryption:
    • Once assigned, the SUCI is encrypted using security algorithms to ensure its confidentiality during transmission. This encryption prevents unauthorized entities from intercepting and deciphering the identifier.

Benefits:

  1. Enhanced Privacy:
    • By using SUCI, 5G networks offer improved privacy protection compared to previous generations. The temporary nature of the identifier ensures that subscribers' long-term identities remain concealed during communication sessions.
  2. Security:
    • The encryption of SUCI adds an additional layer of security, making it difficult for malicious entities to track or intercept subscriber activities.
