5G PDU Session and Its Types

1. What is a PDU Session in 5G?

A PDU Session in 5G refers to the data path that is established between the User Equipment (UE) and the Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) in the 5G Core (5GC). It represents the end-to-end connectivity to allow the transfer of user data between the UE and the 5G network.

2. Key Components of a PDU Session:

  • Session Establishment: PDU Sessions are established through signaling between the UE and the 5GC. The UE initiates a request, and if it's accepted by the network, a PDU Session is established.
  • Data Path: Once established, a PDU Session provides the path for the user data to be transferred between the UE and the 5G network.
  • Quality of Service (QoS): Each PDU Session can have specific QoS requirements defined. This ensures that the data flows associated with the session meet the necessary performance criteria, such as latency, throughput, and reliability.

3. Types of PDU Sessions:

In 5G, there are primarily two types of PDU Sessions:

  1. IP PDU Session (Single IP PDU Session):
    • This is a standard type of PDU Session where the UE is assigned a single IP address.
    • It provides connectivity to the 5G network, allowing the UE to access services and applications over the 5G infrastructure.
    • Suitable for most use-cases where a single IP address suffices.
  2. Dual Connectivity (DC) PDU Session:
    • Dual Connectivity is a mechanism in 5G that allows a UE to be connected to two different gNodeBs simultaneously, enhancing data rates and reliability.
    • With Dual Connectivity, the UE can establish multiple PDU Sessions, and each session can have its own set of QoS parameters.
    • In this context, a DC PDU Session would involve coordination between the two gNodeBs and potentially multiple PDU Sessions (one per gNodeB).
    • This is particularly useful in scenarios where the network aims to optimize resource utilization, provide redundancy, or offer enhanced throughput by aggregating bandwidth from multiple gNodeBs.

4. Conclusion:

The 5G PDU Session is a critical construct that enables end-to-end data connectivity between the User Equipment (UE) and the 5G Core Network. By establishing PDU Sessions, the network can manage and optimize data flows, ensuring efficient and reliable communication for various use-cases. The two primary types of PDU Sessions, namely IP PDU Session and Dual Connectivity PDU Session, cater to different scenarios and requirements, allowing flexibility and scalability in the 5G ecosystem.
