5g option 3x

5G is the fifth generation of cellular network technology, designed to provide faster data speeds, reduced latency, increased connectivity, and support for a massive number of devices. Within the 5G standard, there are different deployment options to meet various use-case requirements. One such option is 5G Option 3x.

5G Option 3x Overview:

5G Option 3x represents a specific configuration for the deployment of 5G New Radio (NR) with a non-standalone (NSA) core network. This means that while 5G radio access is used for user data, the core network retains dependencies on the existing 4G LTE infrastructure for some functionalities.

Technical Details:

  1. Non-Standalone (NSA) Architecture:
    • With NSA deployments, the 5G New Radio (NR) and 4G LTE networks operate in conjunction. The 5G NR provides enhanced data rates and lower latency, while the 4G LTE network serves as the anchor for mobility management and control signaling.
  2. Dual Connectivity:
    • One of the key elements in 5G Option 3x is the concept of dual connectivity. This involves simultaneous connections to both 5G NR and 4G LTE networks.
    • User devices can use both connections simultaneously, allowing for seamless mobility and improved user experience as the device moves between areas covered by 5G and 4G networks.
  3. Coverage and Capacity:
    • 5G Option 3x enables operators to leverage their existing 4G infrastructure while gradually deploying 5G. This approach helps in expanding coverage and enhancing capacity without requiring a complete overhaul of the existing network.
    • Operators can prioritize areas of high demand with 5G while maintaining a consistent user experience across their network footprint.
  4. Core Network Evolution:
    • While the radio access is based on 5G NR, the core network retains its LTE core (EPC – Evolved Packet Core) for specific functionalities like mobility management, session management, and control plane functions.
    • Over time, as the industry progresses towards a fully standalone (SA) 5G core (5GC), operators may evolve from NSA to SA deployments to leverage the full capabilities of 5G.
  5. Deployment Flexibility:
    • 5G Option 3x offers flexibility to operators in terms of deployment. They can introduce 5G NR in areas where it's most beneficial, such as urban centers or high-density areas, while maintaining consistent service quality across their entire coverage area.
