3gpp 5g interfaces

The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is a collaboration between telecommunications standards organizations that develops global standards for mobile communication, including 5G. 5G networks are characterized by their high data rates, low latency, and support for a massive number of connected devices. The 3GPP has defined various interfaces to enable interoperability between different components within a 5G network. Below are some key 3GPP 5G interfaces:

  1. NG-RAN (Next Generation Radio Access Network) Interfaces:

    • N1 Interface: This interface connects the Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) to the User Plane Function (UPF). It is responsible for the establishment, modification, and release of the user plane tunnels.
    • N2 Interface: The N2 interface connects the AMF to the Session Management Function (SMF) for the control plane communication related to session management.
    • N3 Interface: The N3 interface connects the UPF to the Data Network (DN). It is used for carrying user data between the UPF and the DN.
    • N4 Interface: This interface connects the SMF to the Unified Data Management (UDM) function. It is used for accessing subscriber data during the establishment and maintenance of the user plane.
    • N6 Interface: The N6 interface connects the SMF to the Access Traffic Steering, Switching, and Splitting Function (ATSSS). It is used for communication related to traffic steering and switching for user plane optimization.
    • N9 Interface: The N9 interface connects the SMF to the Application Function (AF). It is used for control plane communication between the SMF and the AF for session management.
  3. Non-3GPP Access Interfaces:
    • N3IWF Interface: The Non-3GPP InterWorking Function (N3IWF) interface connects the N3IWF to the SMF. It is used for the control plane communication between the N3IWF and the SMF.
    • N26 Interface: The N26 interface connects the UPF to the N3IWF. It is used for the user plane communication between the UPF and the N3IWF.

These interfaces enable the different components of a 5G network to communicate and work together seamlessly, ensuring the delivery of high-performance, low-latency, and scalable mobile communication services.
